Editorial: 23 April 1999
April saw the publication of what seems to me to be the most
stunning images from stellar interferometry, the time series of images of
the rotating Wolf-Rayet star
WR 104, as reported by Tuthill, Monnier and Danchi in the 8 April 1999
issue of Nature. These results were produced by aperture
masking the Keck I Telescope and are described in more detail
in The Twisted
Tail of Wolf-Rayet 104.
I have continued to make small changes to the OLBIN pages, tracking
changes in URL locations. The proposal for an X-Ray Interferometer,
MAXIM, has been my only
surprising find these past few weeks.
The job market has remained remarkably good for aspiring interferometrists,
as reflected in the number of postings in the OLBIN Job Page.
For both Europeans and North Americans there are also
several opportunities this
year to learn about long baseline stellar interferometry, including the
Forum HRA 1999 (June: Grenobles, France),
the Michelson Interferometry Summer School
(August: Pasadena, USA), and the
International School of Space Science (September: L'Aquila, Italy). To my knowledge, the latter has not yet
been formally announced.
Please be patient with this editor if in the month of May 1999 there are
little or no changes to the OLBIN pages. My excuses are as follows:
On the other hand, if you are French, your May "bridge" days put you
on vacation for most of that month anyway and so you probably wont notice.
Thank you for your indulgence.
Peter R. Lawson.
