MICHELSON INTERFEROMETRY SUMMER SCHOOL Pasadena, California 9-13 August 1999 THIRD ANNOUNCEMENT: 13 July 1999 The Michelson Interferometry Summer School will be held at the California Institute of Technology, in Pasadena, CA, from Monday August 9 through Friday August 13, 1999. The Summer School will consist of a series of tutorial lectures describing the theory and techniques of optical/infrared long baseline stellar interferometry, from its fundamental principles through to its astrophysical applications, methods of data analysis, and interpretation. The Summer School is intended primarily for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers. There will be a limit of 120 attendees. No registration fee will be charged. Venues, Caltech, and the Pasadena Area The tutorial sessions on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday will be held in the auditorium of the Beckman Institute on the campus of the California Institute of Technology. On Tuesday transportation will be provided from the campus to the Mount Wilson Observatory and on Thursday transportation will be provided to Palomar Observatory. Tutorial sessions at the observatories will precede the tours on these days. Most of the local information we include in this announcement can also be found through those pages. Getting to Pasadena The California Institute of Technology is located in Pasadena, CA. Both the Los Angeles (LAX) and Burbank airports serve the Pasadena area. Please consult instructions on "How To Get To Caltech" http://www.admissions.caltech.edu/visiting/directions.htm Should you decide to use the AirportBus, note that it leaves LAX on the hour every hour up until 9:00 pm, and has one stop in downtown LA before arriving at the Holiday Inn and Hilton hotel in Pasadena. It costs $12.00 one-way and $20.00 return. Caltech is then only a short taxi-ride away. "Super Shuttle" transport http://www.supershuttle.com/bur.htm is also be possible from LAX and Burbank and from LAX costs roughly $24.00 one way. It will drive you directly to your destination. Reception and Registration Registration and an informal reception will be held outside the Beckman Institute at Caltech on the evening of Sunday August 8th. A cash bar will be available. Summer School Dinner The Summer School Dinner will be held in the Caltech Athenaeum on the evening of Wednesday, August 11th. Tickets for this event must be purchased in advance during registration. Accommodations If you have requested and been granted financial assistance, we should already have contacted you to arrange for your accommodations. If we have given you financial support and you haven't heard from us please contact Debi Fambro at dfambro@huey.jpl.nasa.gov. If you have *NOT* requested financial assistance you will be responsible for booking your own accommodations. Although we have booked rooms in Caltech's student residences, these rooms are now all accounted for and the remaining accommodations available for the summer school are certain to be off-campus. It is urgent that you book your accommodations as soon as possible, as many hotels in the Pasadena area are sold out on the week of August 8 - August 13. Lunch Arrangements for Mt. Wilson and Mt. Palomar Trips Since there are no facilities to purchase food at either site, and the nearest restaurants are up to an hour's drive from the mountaintop, we are making arrangements for box lunches on Tuesday (Mt. Wilson) and Thursday (Mt. Palomar). Each lunch (along with snacks and beverages) will cost $15. On all other days, you are free to make your own lunchtime arrangements. We *strongly* encourage you to purchase a lunch ticket for both days; we will not have any extra lunches available to accommodate participants who do not purchase a lunch in advance or who do not bring their own supplies. If you are interested in purchasing box lunches, we *must* receive payment from you by Monday, August 2. Summer school participants from outside the US may pay at registration as long as they have sent an email saying that they will be purchasing lunch. Please specify if you are a vegetarian. Special Events Sunday, August 8: Depending on sufficient interest, we will arrange for group excursions to several popular Southern California tourist locations. Group transportation will cost from $25-$40 per person, depending on the number of people participating. Public transportation in the Greater Los Angeles area is limited, especially on Sundays. Raging Waters is the largest and best-known waterpark in the Southern California area, most famously featured in the film "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure."
