Course Notes from the 2000 Michelson Interferometry Summer School

Le Conte Hall, University of California, Berkeley
August 21-25, 2000

Peter Lawson, Editor (Jet Propulsion Laboratory)

The 2000 Michelson Interferometry Summer School was held on campus in Le Conte Hall at the University of California, Berkeley, CA, from Monday August 21 through Friday August 25. It was the third Summer School in the series and the second school within the Michelson Fellowship Program.

The Summer School consisted of a series of tutorial lectures describing the science and stellar astrophysics of the present and upcoming generation of optical/infrared interferometers. Emphasis was placed on our understanding of current astrophysical models and the ways in which interferometers may be used to expand our knowledge of astrophysical processes. The fundamentals of interferometry was briefly reviewed in the first lecture of this school, but aspects of the design and engineering of interferometers, having been described extensively in the 1999 summer school, were not covered.
