A Closer Look at Interacting Binaries

Abstract:

Binary stars provide many of the finest fireworks in the sky, including Algol ("the demon") eclipses, nova explosions, and some types of supernovae and (probably) gamma ray bursts. The talk will provide an overview of our present understanding of the advanced evolution of interacting binaries, the major unsolved problems concerning loss of mass and (especially) angular momentum, and areas where imaging and spectroscopy with greatly enhanced angular resolution could contributed to solving some of them.
