2002 Michelson Interferometry Summer School
Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics
June 24-28, 2002
TRAVELING TO THE MICHELSON SUMMER SCHOOL
Now that you have your itinerary, please note that you are flying on
United or Delta and your ticket will be electronic. You should pick up
your ticket at the gate at your airport
Make sure you have a photo identification and, where applicable, your
passport.
It is most important that you telephone your airline close to the time of
departure, probably the day before, to learn the exact departure time.
The airlines will contact the JPL Travel office with changes in
schedules, however, last minute changes may not be communicated.
The distance between Logan/Boston airport is about 10 miles and the taxi
fare is about $25.
If you wish to take the subway from the airport, the connections between
lines are difficult with luggage, but of course still possible, and the walk
to Lesley from Harvard Square is a bit long. Information on the subway lines
in Boston can be found here:
ON ARRIVING AT LESLEY UNIVERSITY
A map of the immediate area surrounding the dormitory where you will be
staying in Cambridge is attached (PDF).
Check in takes place at Jenckes House, 31 Mellon St., location "23" on the map.
They are open Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 9:00 pm; Saturday and Sunday
10:00 am to 12:00 noon, and 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
If you are arriving at other times, the Lesley folks may be able to
make arrangements to be there. For those arriving outside these bounds
and finding that Jenckes House is closed, they can proceed down the
street away from Mass Ave to the Security office on the
right side of the street opposite side from Jenckes House and denoted by
the white sign. The Security folks are always there and can make
arrangements to get room keys.
If you are arriving by car, the following directions on
getting to Lesley University may be
useful.
ROOMS AT MACKENZIE HOUSE, MALLOCH HOUSE AND WHITE HALL
Please consult the Campus Map for
the location of the dorms. They are located together near the corner of Everett Street and
Oxford Street, locations 32, 34, and 36 on the map. Access is via Mellen Street.
The women will be housed together in MacKenzie or Malloch Hall. They
will be in single rooms (rooms may have a one or two single beds).
Each floor has a
lounge with clothes washer and dryer, kitchen area with stove and
refrigerator, sitting area, cable TV, payphone, soda and snack
vending machines.
The men will be housed on two floors in White Hall. Accommodations and
conveniences same as above.
The dorms are in adjacent buildings. Charlie's Coffee Shop is open
during the day in MacKenzie Hall. The Cafeteria will not be open.
Dorms have a person on duty 24 hours. Dorm will provide towels,
linen, pillows. If a replacement is needed they will provide it.
GETTING FROM LESLEY TO THE CENTER FOR ASTROPHYSICS
- Go west on Mellen Street to Massachusetts Avenue
- Turn right on Massachusetts Avenue
- Turn left onto Shepard St (cross at the lights by Starbucks)
- Follow Shepard to Garden Street
- Turn right on Garden Street
- Continue past Bond Street
- Turn left up the driveway of the Center for Astrophysics (by the lights)
where Linnaean Street ends at Garden Street.
The reception is in the Pratt Conference Room on your left as you come up the
driveway.
The lectures of the Summer School will be held in the Phillips Auditorium,
which is further up the driveway, around the building to the left, and
up the stairs.
