• The University of Michigan has an opening for a postdoctoral position related to work on the development of hardware and software for an infrared fringe tracker for the CHARA Array. This position is funded for three years, subject to annual renewal, and can begin as early as September 1, 2005. • A postdoctoral position in work related to extrasolar planets is available at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. See the announcement in the OLBIN email Forum.
• Applications are now being accepted for a permanent civil-service position at the U.S. Naval Observatory in Flagstaff, AZ working on the NPOI project. Principle duties of this position would involve collaboration with other project members on improving astrometric and imaging algorithms and software, and work in support of a survey of the bright stars using the co-phased 6-element NPOI array. Related activities might include studies of detector performance, system throughput, and system stability. There will also be opportunities for the successful candidate to pursue other research of their choosing. This position will be at the GS-12 ($56,463 - $73,403) or GS-13 ($67,143 - $87,289) level, depending on experience. • A Ph.D. position is available at the Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge, UK. For details see the announcement in the OLBIN email Forum.
• A Marie Curie Training Site has been established by the European Commission in 2001 in Ile-de-France, under the name Astronomical Optical Interferometry. Three laboratories, namely the LESIA at Observatoire de Paris with V. Coudé du Foresto et G. Perrin, the Département d'optique (DOTA) at ONERA with G. Rousset, the Institut d'Astrophysique spatiale (IAS) at Orsay with A. Léger are eligible to begin or pursue a PhD on various topics related to high angular resolution in astrophysics, imaging and interferometry or coronography, both on the ground with the VLT interferometer (using guaranteed time) or others (OHANA, CHARA) and in space (missions TPF/NASA or Darwin/ESA). The stay in any of these three places can last between 3 and 12 months, and should be part of a PhD prepared in a EU country or in an associated one (such as Switzerland, Israel..). A salary of 1200 euros/month is given to the selected candidates. Applications must reach any of the above mentioned scientists or Prof. P. • Applications are invited for postdoctoral and Ph.D. positions in the Infrared Interferometry Group of the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in one of the following areas: star formation, active galactic nuclei, radiative transfer modeling, infrared long-baseline interferometry, or astronomical image processing (preferably with experience in object-oriented programming). The successful applicants will be expected to participate in the development of interferometric methods, interferometric observations, and their interpretation. • The California Institute of Technology, Postdoctoral Scholars Program at JPL invites applications for a postdoctoral research position in infrared astrophysics. Observations and instrumentation development which would further progress toward the goals of NASA's planned Terrestrial Planet Finder and JWST missions are envisioned. The work would involve observations with ground-based or space-based infrared telescopes and interferometers, and/or work in the area of high-contrast imaging approaches, such as nulling interferometry and coronagraphy. • The W.M. Keck Observatory has two open positions to support the Keck Interferometer project. The Keck Interferometer, combining the two 10-m diameter Keck telescopes, is currently capable of performing visibility-based science observations. The specific NASA Origins science goals will ultimately be supported by an instrument capable of also performing nulling, differential phase and imaging science. The Interferometer Scientist or Optics Engineer will provide systems level support for the implementation, optimization and science operation of the Interferometer. • Faculty Position; The Department of Physics at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez campus anticipates a tenure track position starting August 2002. The Department with 28 full-time faculty members, offers B.S. and M.S. degrees in Physics and has externally funded research programs in several fields. We are particularly interested in candidates to strengthen our research groups in (1) materials Science/Condensed Matter Physics (experimental and theoretical), (2) High Energy Physics (experimental), and (3) Optics. • Magdalena Ridge Observatory Interferometer and Adaptive Optics: The Magdalena ridge Observatory project is currently funded and serious work is beginning. The University of Puerto Rico will be deeply involved in the Interferometry and Adaptive Optics programs and expects to have at least one new position open soon, and possibly more. In this light they would like to hear from interested parties with expertise and experience in hardware development and design in these two related areas. There is a very real possibility that the one or more of the future positions may primarily involve teaching physics at both the graduate and undergraduate level. • The Observatoire de la Cote d'Azur (OCA) is seeking applicants for the 2001 Henri Poincaré Postdoctoral Fellowships. JPL will award up to two Michelson Postdoctoral Fellowships to work on the application and technical development of optical interferometry in astronomy, at a host institution in the USA. JPL will award a contract to the host institution to fund the successful candidate for two years with a likely extension of one additional year. JPL will award a contract to the host institution to fund the successful candidate for three years. Fellowships will start in September 2001 or earlier, by mutual agreement between the successful applicant and the host institution. Fellowships will include tuition, a student stipend and funding for travel, including visits to JPL to collaborate with staff working on ground-based and space-based interferometers such as PTI, SIM, and the Keck Interferometer. The terms of the application are similar to the one described above for the Postdoctoral Fellowships. • The French Action Spécifique Haute Résolution Angulaire proposes a postdoctoral position, funded through the Centre National des Etudes Spatiales. The position is for a specialist in data reduction who has experience with long baseline interferometry, to participate in the goals of the Action Spécifique Haute Résolution Angulaire in the exploitation of the VLTI and GI2T/REGAIN interferometers. • University Lectureships advertised at the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge (UK). • The Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy (CHARA) is advertising the position of Research Scientist I for work in conjunction with the CHARA Array.
• The University of Sydney is advertising a Professor Harry Messel Research Fellowship for research in the School of Physics. Prof. John Davis (davis@physics.usyd.edu.au) is seeking qualified applicants interested in optical interferometry to join the Sydney University Stellar Interferometer (SUSI) programme through this fellowship. • The Physics department at the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez announces a tenure track junior faculty position open for August 1999. An additional temporary position is also possible. The department is looking for people interested in hardware development for optical astronomical interferometry to support development of the interferometer at the Magdalena Ridge Observatory. Applications for those primarily interested in Physics and Astronomy will also be accepted. The position will have significant teaching duties in general physics. • Postdoctoral position is available for recent French PhD students to work at IOTA, in collaboration with the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and the Observatory of Paris (Meudon), as described in the announcement by Vincent Coudé du Foresto. Candidates must be French citizens. This post will be based at the campus of the University of Arizona, with a large fraction of the time spent on site at Mount Hopkins. The position may commence in September 1999, for a maximum duration of 12 months. Candidates should be available before the end of 1999, and be no more than 30 years old by the application deadline of 30 April 1999. • Software Engineer/Designer for the MIDI Instrument of the VLTI.
• Expertise Center for VLTI. Staff positions will be created for this new center in the Netherlands. No nationality restrictions. Application deadline is January 15th 1999. Also advertised in the AAS Job Register.
• ESO has advertised VLTI Positions. Eight positions are available within the VLTI Group at ESO for software engineers, opto-mechanical engineers, physicists and instrumentation scientists for the development of VLTI Instrumentation, the design of opto-mechanical systems, the design of high accuracy servo-controlled mechanical systems and the modelization of the end-to-end VLTI system. Deadline for submissions is December 31, 1998.
• Lowell Postdoctoral Fellowship. Facilities available for use by the Fellow include the Navy Prototype Optical Interferometer. Deadline for applications is 23 November 1998.
