Jean-Marie Mariotti (1955 - 1998)

Text by Betrand Koehler

Jean Marie Mariotti passed away in Munich on July, 28 1998 at the age of 43 from acute leukemia.

The tragedy of his death has been a shock for all who have known him.

A short ceremony was held in Munich on Friday, 31 July prior to his cremation. His ashes will be buried in the Trivaux cemetery near the Observatory of Paris (Meudon, France) during a ceremony to be held on Saturday September 12, 1998 at 11:30.

A scientific colloquium was held in his memory at the Observatory of Paris (Meudon) on Monday September 14, 1998. During this day, his three main research topics were addressed: High Angular Resolution & the VLTI, the search for low-mass companions, and space interferometry & the DARWIN project. A description of the program (in french) can be found at http://despa.obspm.fr/seminaires.html. More information on this event can be obtained from Vincent Foresto (foresto@hplyot.obspm.fr).

Pierre Léna has written a short biography of Jean-Marie Mariotti, which will appear in the ESO Messenger.

For anyone wishing to relay their condolences to Jean Marie's wife, for the moment she can be contacted at the following address:

Françoise Bareau-Mariotti

Mail addressed to her previous address in Munich will also be forwarded to her until December 1, 1998.

Some of his former colleagues plan to write a small biographical booklet about his various activities so that his children (a son 3.5 and a daughter 6.5 years old) can later understand what their father was doing and what kind of person he was. In this context, they would be pleased to receive from people who worked with him (or simply met him) a short description of the work and/or the moments shared with Jean Marie. These testimonials will be given to his family, attached to the biographical booklet. Email can be addressed to: bkoehler@eso.org with the subject "Jean Marie".
